Race Management

This race had two options for the weather the previous night, which lead almost the entire paved course covered in a layer of ice: salt and increase course support to reroute from more dangerous spots OR cancel. Neither happened. This was the most obvious oversight of the event management. However, even if the weather would have been warmer, you get the impression the race would not have been much better ran (the location would have been its saving grace if it wasn't a frozen tundra). Corrals were poorly set up, the announcer was confused where to direct runners, water stops were not equally spaced with one at 12.5 miles and a bottleneck, no bathrooms between miles 6-13, volunteers seemed to have no clue as they were handing out half marathon medals to 10k finishers (not the volunteers fault! Poor direction) I heard at one point runners were getting their own medals.
Something that stuck out to me that no one else mentioned: this seemed to be a rather large race in terms of participants (maybe 2000?) maybe that's not a lot for Chicago. But regardless, there was minimal crowd support. NOW it was cold, so I can understand this, HOWEVER there was a LARGE number of runners and walkers NOT in the race but in Lincoln Park and running/walking on the course at the same time.... Esp in the areas that seemed to be more clear of ice. Which made it difficult to make up any time. Because, quite frankly, they gave absolutely no respect to the fact that a race was happening. That stuck out to me being I am from out of town.
