I've run a dozen or so 5k's, and this, unfortunately, is at the bottom of my ranking. The race is around Mission Bay and Fiesta Island, so the scenery is awesome. There is ample parking, and the course is as flat as a pancake. While the 5k course was "closed," there were still people on bikes to contend with. For the 10k and half marathon distance (which I watched after my 5k), the runners were constantly weaving and bobbing around walkers, non-race runners, skateboarders, and bicyclists. As for the aid stations, there was one at mile 1, and that was it for 5k. This race attracts all physical shapes and a wide range of ages, as the 5k is a run/walk, and I know some participants would have benefitted from more aid stations and water breaks. Overall, they have some kinks to work out, especially course management.

I chose the San Diego Half Marathon as my first marathon given my runner friends' recommendations. Many list this as their favorite half, and I now know why. I was most impressed with the race management, aid stations and the many volunteers who were out to help. Of course, the scenery was great! The Washington Street hill was tough but manageable, and I'm glad the last 3 miles were downhill. I'm looking forward to running this race in future years!
