This is a fat-ass style trail race in the freezing cold Kansas winter. They offer both a 12K and a 25K. I ran the 12K in 2017 and I'm already registered for the 25K in 2018.
There are two aid stations that offer water only. It is up to runners to carry their own vessel for water as well as their own fuel. Also, if you run slow enough that the water is frozen, well, sorry. This is what a fat-ass style run is all about--a self-supported race.
The terrain is some of the most difficult you'll find in Kansas. The saying is "Don't look up, or you're going down!" I think it's true; even though I never fell, several runners around me did. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous with towering limestone bluffs and the beautiful Elk City Lake all around.
Runners record their own times as they come back to the start. Then, the soup! Homemade soup enjoyed around the fire with friends and runners.
It was an awesome morning!
