Of course I am probably a little biased because this is my "hometown race." I've been involved in some way each year it's been run. In fact, volunteering at course intersections in the early years is why I started running in the first place ("Hey, if they can all do it, I can probably, too!"). But, truly, this is an enjoyable event that keeps improving. There is always plenty of parking and lots of amenities. Most of the town really gets behind the event so there's a lot to enjoy the whole weekend. And the fans (particularly for the half marathon course) are GREAT. I so thoroughly enjoyed the support from strangers and you can't beat a stadium finish line. The addition of FREE race photos this year really put the whole thing over the top for me. If you want a fast, friendly course with a good crowd that's not TOO big, this is the race for you!

Well, it was February in Illinois. So, I'm not sure what I expected. But, it was COLD. At one point we got hailed on (not a lot and not big hail...but, still!). Running through the forested area and across the lake was pretty neat. I'm used to running where there is a lot of wind. So, while there were a lot of hills here, I didn't mind since the trees blocked the wind. I'd take hills over strong winds any day.
But, there were definitely some drawbacks. Course support was limited. When I reached my "end" and would have liked to call it quits--too bad. There was no one around to ask for help or anything for good long stretches. So, I walked for awhile. Walking out in the cold alone when you're already wet with sweat and snow was MISERABLE. Add to that some confusion at the beginning about where the start line even was and the drive involved to get there and I don't expect I'll ever be back.
I would recommend this race to others who prefer a quieter race course. As I said, the scenery was beautiful. And, if you are a cold-weather runner, in general, it's perfect for you. The price is right for a half marathon and the sweatshirt is a nice change from a t-shirt.
