This was my 33rd consecutive TCM-not really offered as a brag-I have simply found the perfect marathon and I am a Capricorn. One person told me I was very lucky to have been able to amass this string and he was absolutely correct-no disasters, injuries-just the death of our daughter four years back so now I run it for her. The race itself was as good as ever and the race is as much the crowd support as it is the runners. Light rail is a splendid feature and the porto-john arrangement was great particularly as most marathoners didn't seem to know about the legions of johns for the ten milers just around the corner so no lines! The missing thing at the start (see expo, same complaint) was that Caribou or any other coffee vendor was not there. SAD. My only course complaints are two-fold, that there were potholes that might well have been attended to a tad and miles 7-8 were out of joint per my watch. I guess a third is that so many racers are buried in their head phones that it is nigh to impossible to communicate with anybody. The expo while well organized seems to be a mere shadow of its former self-the former marathon merch area is down to closet size and the corporate shoe folks have that space, did I mention no coffee? ( read free coffee). One very nice feature that seems to come and go is the "historical display" of past medals and finishers' shirts-I favor its return or even expansion. The post-race so called is the venue for most of my concerns. Everything about the medals, treats and volunteers is perfect but I do want to raise the matter of multiple finishing mats at the finish line-I saw folks literally stop at the first one so was that the end of the race? Now I saw one review claim that the marathon has but one real hill-I think I know the one he meant, the one that is three-miles long, anyway I do want to protest the addition of the post-race hill to get the finisher's shirts-while tis true that marathoners should walk at least 30 minutes after finishing shouldn't we get to choose if we want to start that off with yet another hill? So up we tredged and down we tredged and tried to squeeze through the gate which is nigh to impossible. Another reviewer mentioned finishing photos-well I didn't see them. After I had surmounted get your shirt hill and returned to the base, I climbed capital hill to meet with my other half who wasn't to be found-the family letter system was nowhere to be seen-someone drew my attention to its now location at bottom of the hill where it was situated in a bog according to my other half who wears sandals and got wet socks. Race results used to be available at the finish line but not any more-as long as you have a cell phone and app you are set which I don't so I am not. So to date I have no race photos and had my real finish time once we got back to Des Moines. Beer at the end is a mighty fine idea (since there was no coffee there either-read free coffee) but you have to carry id which I don't-seems to me they could check id's and implant wrist bands at the Expo for this feature-but no id no beer. Back in the day before chips we would spend hours post-race inside the armory eating all the Pillsbury ice cream bars we could eat-watch the awards and eat stuff. Now there is no reason to hang around particularly if we are racing a blessed delayed checkout time at our hotel. I will say the shirt was sweet and the medal spectacular and I will be back next fall running for my daughter's memory and I invite others to consider joining me there.
