The Gritty 5K brings together the best of Philadelphia...sports, games and running (or walking)! This three miles course is not for anyone attempting to PR! There are fun obstacles which include a graffiti station, ultimate frisbee, and HOT DOGS to enjoy as you cross the finish! Gritty showed up during the course to throw a cake in someone's face and break a pinata!
It's a fun run to raise money and awareness of the Flyers Charities. Good vibe, good crowd. There isn't really an expo; just go to the stadium to pick up your race gear. On race day there are family friendly activities and the chance to take photos with Gritty.

A great race through South Philly!
Great race support, love the management of the race. Volunteers were knowledgeable, the race swag is a collector's poster. The tee shirt was not as soft as previous years, but the color was good. The course is a bit of a twist but it's flat and through South Philly neighborhoods in which the neighbors make cheering a party.
The after party is a wonderful celebration of racing and friends with local vendors and businesses offering refreshments.

Virtual Support
When I signed up for the virtual DC Superman Run, my intention for the race was to see how fast I could run a mile. You know the the whole deal with Superman…faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, etc. I wanted to prove that Rachee is fast and fast equals better than where she was this time last year. But, my runs times became a little longer and a little slower and suddenly the need for speed became a moot point. It seemed I was so focused on fast that I forgot all of the things I love about running: the feeling of accomplishment when I actually completed a run. The camaraderie with my run groups. Exploring the city. Getting out of my comfort zone and doing a thing that I had never envisioned me doing.
So I slowed my roll and adjusted my thinking. My Superman Run was no longer “how fast” but more of “who do I need to support” while running and how do I let go of the negative thoughts holding me back during my run. Why do I give those thoughts so much power? No one cares how fast, my body shape, my monthly goal. We were enjoying the process.
Running this virtual race gave me time to work on pacing, made me realize that it was fun and that being a hero wasn't JUST about fast but being good to myself.

For years I have been promising to participate in this race but for some reason or other, I was unable to participate. This year I signed up, got out there and I crushed it!
Oh my stars this route a challenge but fun. It’s hilly. LThe race starts with a sweet downhill and goes through the streets of a Bryn Mawr neighborhood and then suddenly, there is an incline and another and one incline that is a half a mile long. The end of the race is running back up that formerly sweet downhill and it's a challenge.
Small expo; just a few sponsors and free snacks and refreshments for all.
It was so wonderful to do an in person race. People wore masks and were socially distant. There was a post run banana!
It was a warm day so and there was plenty of water. It's quite a challenge but worth running.

Due to Covid restrictions, I participated in this race virtually. I usually run a 10k each week with my run group and decided to go the distance for three more miles/5k. Using the Philadelphia Parks as a backdrop, race day was mostly flat with short periods of elevation.
There was an issue with my swag but the organizers quickly replaced the missing jacket.
I am excited to participate in this run in person as finish line chocolate is a big draw.
