First of all, I wasn't sure how fun the city of Philadelphia would actually be. I traveled with my 20 year old son for the weekend. He is NOT a runner, but does accompany me on some of my races. We both love to eat. And he also likes to shop with me (with little complaining:). We flew into and took an Uber into the city center from the airport.
We got settled into the hotel (Hilton) and went exploring. I always say, the best way to find things is by foot. We happen to come upon the Union Station Market Place on our way to the Expo. Coming from small town Iowa, let me tell you the food was to die for. Soooooo many choices YUM. Sweets to meets to noodles. I mean everything. It is a must stop.
The one place I did want to go to was the 1st prison in the US. We took an auditory tour. This place was eerie yet fascinating. Another must:). From there we took an Uber to Geno's Philly Cheese Steak. The original birthplace of the Philly Cheese steak. Also did some historic exploring (Liberty Bell)
Ok enough about the food and a little about the marathon. I paid extra for the VIP experience. I did that so I could hang out the Des Linden and Meb. It was worth the money. We got a heated tent. Indoor bathroom. Pre and Post race food. Private bag check. Private message tent. Definitely work the extra $$$. The start and finish line was by the famous Rocky scene. The course itself was scenic. not too hilly. Medal was awesome (Liberty Bell) Nice shirt with the marathon route printed on the back.
I highly recommend Philly marathon to anyone. May sure you have time to go sight seeing !
