I was so happy to get the chance to run one of the big 5 world marathons. Race day was super hot but the organizers were ready with misters, fluids and even sponges soaked in ice cold water, which turned out to be a life saver for many of us.
The expo lines were very long due to the covid precautions. We waited over an hour to get in. Bib pickup was easy, but I have to say the free swag was seriously lacking. A tech t-shirt which was black with basic white lettering. Very generic looking. That was it, a t shirt. Ive run much smaller races and they loaded me up with swag. Being a world class marathon (and expensive) I expected much more.
There were some sharp finisher jackets online, but they were sold out before I even finished the race.
The expo vendors were lacking as well compared to others I've been to, perhaps because of covid.
Race day was humid from the start. I was in corral M, which is near the back and it took 90 minutes from the start gun for my group to cross the start line.
Crowd support and volunteer support was top notch throughout the race. I really appreciated the bananas during the second half.
Between the heat and some injuries I really struggled from about 18 miles on. Encouraging words from volunteers and the crowd really helped.
Again due to covid, spectators weren't allowed at the finish line. Understandable, but it bummed me out. Post race was efficient. I got my medal right away along with a much appreciated ice cold beer and a can of pringles. Both hit the spot. The medal is easily the favorite of my collection.
I definitely recommend this race.
