100% a race you do as a fun run for the atmosphere and neat little town. Not one to take too seriously from a competitive standpoint. Very little thought put into the after race ceremonies. You could be top 3 overall, but since there's no podium and it's AG only, 2nd and 3rd overall can still go home empty handed. That said, it's a downhill half based around a brewfest, so it's not like the stakes are super high. Go with your friends and enjoy the beers afterwards. If you want a RACE, pick a different event.
The whole thing is reasonably well organized. Buses get people to the starting line on time, or you can drive/drop off. Doesn't seem like there are enough port-o-potties around the starting line, but it's a tiny church parking lot. The area around Durango is beautiful, but the course doesn't really showcase it too well. There's a nice view around the lake, but if you really want to experience the area, go hiking on a different day. The swag is decent, I still use the beer glass they give out.
Other random thoughts: If you're travelling in, Durango is getting to be quite expensive. If you're traveling from out of state, even though it's a downhill race, it still begins around 8000 ft elevation. There are steep climbs around mile 1 and 5(?), one steady mile long climb about halfway through as well, and the last mile has several climbs. The course used to be dirt, but now it's paved. Talking to other runners, I met someone who was upset because they wore heavy trails shoes thinking it was still dirt from prior years.
