I've been wanting to run the Rehoboth Half Marathon for years and finally was able to make it happen! I'd trained for nearly 8 months so I was really excited to have a strong race as a postpartum mom!
I arrived at the expo for packet pickup about 10 minutes before ending thanks to crazy traffic heading down from Philly on a rainy Friday night, but I made it! The volunteers were so nice and everything was organized. The race started at 7 am and we drove about 15 minutes from our Airbnb and easily parked with time to warmup before lining up near the boardwalk. This is a smaller race which was actually very refreshing compared to the larger Philly races I'm used to. I decided to line up around the 2:30 pacer just to make sure I didn't push myself too hard at the start! Before I knew it, we were off!
The course was really nice, we got to run along the boardwalk and though it was VERY humid, I couldn't complain about 55 degrees in December! The sky was overcast but who doesn't love a view of the ocean! I really enjoyed running past the neighborhoods and the spectators were plentiful along the way. The course is very flat, but it didn't feel super "fast" for me, since the humidity really made be very mindful of hydrating and fueling early and often. I carried my own hydration but there were plenty of aid stations on the course with lots of volunteers.
I was first worried about the long out and back's but the good thing was that there were other runners running the opposite direction which helped break the monotony. Everyone was in good spirits. I was very on top of monitoring my pacing, so I never got in a particular "zone" like I often do in races, but I think I needed the focus.
The toughest part of the race was during the trail section. Because it rained the day before there were lots of puddles that took up the whole trail. It was a bit narrow at times getting around, but I was actually pleased for a couple of small hills to help break things up!
I was so happy to finally get near the finish and did my best to push to the very end! What a challenging but rewarding race! I see why everyone loves it. I'd highly recommend it - super organized, great energy, and just really a lot of fun!
