I have run the Detroit full twice, both times I had a wonderful experience. Though this is the only race where I have run a full marathon and I don't have another race to compare it to, I do feel that this race is managed well. For the 2017 race the weather wasn't real great, but the race directors made sure that all the runners knew what to do in the event of a storm. They were also prepared when runners woke up the day of the race to extra humid conditions. Race directors shot all the runners an email saying that there would be extra water on the course because of the tough conditions.
The scenery throughout the course is incredible. Really, nothing beats running over the Ambassador Bridge as the sun is coming up. Honestly, I thought running through Indian Village was going to be a snooze because the running pack clears out after the half marathoners finish and the fatigue sets in. I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone was outside cheering on the runners and it was really nice. Belle Isle is always beautiful. This is especially helpful when your at mile 22 and don't want to run anymore. The course is pretty flat, even with the bridge and tunnel.
The expo is well organized and it would be real easy to get in and out quickly if you wanted. I went Saturday morning right when it opened both years I ran and it wasn't that crowded yet.
Overall, I give this race a 10/10 and look forward to running it again.
