Brent Peterson's thoughts:

The Hawaii Bird Conservation Marathon is an exceptional race showcasing Hawaii's breathtaking beauty. As one of my favorite marathons and the best race in Hawaii, this event is an absolute must for any runner looking to combine their passion for the sport with an appreciation for nature and conservation.

The point-to-point course starts at the picturesque Volcano Golf Course and finishes in front of the Boy Scouts of America - Aloha Council, Kilauea Camp. The USATF-certified course is downhill, with a few gently rolling uphill sections at the beginning and end. The total drop of 3,792 feet from the highest point at 4,035 feet to the lowest at 243 feet, coupled with an average grade of 2.72%, makes for a fast and exciting race.

During the first few miles, runners are treated to the enchanting dawn chorus of the Apapane, Hawaii Amakihi, I'iwi (all Hawaiian Honeycreepers), Oma'o (Hawaiian Thrush), and Hawaii Elepaio (a monarch flycatcher). You might even have a chance to spot the endangered Nene (Hawaiian Goose) and the 'Io (Hawaiian Hawk), adding to the thrill and uniqueness of this event. (I did see A LOT of NeNe this year)

The first 15 miles of the course are surrounded by a stunning mix of original Hawaiian hapu'u & ʻōhiʻa rainforest, residential, and agricultural land, providing a diverse and visually appealing backdrop for the race. The all-paved roads ensure a smooth running surface, allowing participants to focus on their performance and the incredible surroundings.

In addition to being a fantastic racing experience, the Hawaii Bird Conservation Marathon serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting Hawaii's unique avian species and their habitats. By participating in this event, runners contribute to the conservation efforts and raise awareness about these incredible creatures.

With its stunning scenery, unique bird-watching opportunities, and fast course, it's no wonder that the Hawaii Bird Conservation Marathon is a popular Boston Qualifier, with 36% of runners achieving their qualifying times in 2022. I give this race a well-deserved 5-star rating and highly recommend it to any runner looking for an unforgettable experience in Hawaii.
