This is an absolute must do for runners of all skillsets. The course, as has been noted elsewhere, is absolutely incredible and quite scenic during the fall. Marines line the course to cheer you on, and the overall crowd support in general is quite fabulous. The Blue Mile -- which I think was the 15th mile -- is quite the emotionally overwhelming experience, with pictures of fallen Marines lining the sides of the course and Marines holding American flags. Very moving. This course is hilly, especially at the start, so make sure you conserve energy.
Couple of things, however -- Getting to the start of the course is a disaster if you're planning on taking public transit. DC opened the Metro this year at 6, and trains were almost overwhelmed with people trying to get to the race. From the Pentagon Metro station, it's another mile or so walk to the start. This year's race started at 7:55, and the trains dropped us off at around 7:15. If you can find a place closer to the start line, do that rather than staying in Arlington or somewhere farther away so you're not literally running to the start like I was.
Also, we need to talk for a minute about this year's shirt (pictured) -- It is hideous, and I very much hope race organizers do a better job with future versions. Otherwise, this is an absolutely fantastic race that I would highly recommend.
