Ranked the 2nd most difficult marathon in the world, and I believe it. Race starts in town, went out at an easy run but was winded from the altitude at 6300ft. Start the trail about 1.25 miles in, and the climbing starts. The next 12 miles is mostly a power hike with some trotting, as the climb up the mountain, above timberline and up to the summit at 14,100ft (mile 12 getting steeper, and mile 13 being the steepest with some 800ft elevation gain while already above 13,300ft altitude, on a rocky, narrow, switch-back trail). I was definitely feeling the altitude since I was at sea-level the day before- was getting lightheaded and a little headachy, wasn't able to keep my heart rate down. Getting up to the Summit Banner was a great accomplishment!
Then, the harrowing run down the mountain on the same trail. I fell once, fortunately on loose gravel and not the rocks/boulders. I went at a walk or trot for the next several miles until I was below timberline again, and the trail became less treacherous, I began to go at a cautious slow run. With 8 miles to go I was able to increase speed a little, but still kept it cautious because of the rocks and roots. finally, the last mile was back on pavement and I was able to bring it to the finish at a good run! Hearing my name called out and then crossing the finish line with a sense of pride and accomplishment!
The finish "party" was pretty good- pizza, brownies, and beer from a couple of local breweries.
The expo the day before was fine, easy check in, some good merchandise. It was relatively small which is good in my opinion. They also had a couple of local breweries there with free beer (though I only had small samples since it was the day before the race).
The volunteers were fantastic! the other runners were friendly. It was a great adventure and experience!

My 5th year in a row and 7th overall for RnR San Diego. a good local race, though I did like the old coarse better when it went through down town San Diego and the a bit of the waterfront.... and the 163 was earlier (now it is mile 22-24, up hill, and it is hot and humid by then). the finish at Waterfront park is good. Overall, i enjoy and will be doing it again next year!

Spectacular marathon! low key "expo"- check in, get the bib, some merchandise, and out- very simple, which is the way it should be.
Marathon morning was also low key. Get on the ferry to the start at Two Harbors. Line up... "read, set, go". course was very well marked. Challenging trail course with 4310 total elevation gain... and spectacular views. Well stocked aid stations with very friendly volunteers.
Finisher's shirt at the end. Finish area is also low key, which is nice.
a small race with only about 500 people, it is fun to see the same people around the small town before and after.

A fun road trip up to Shaver Lake. Very well run and organized, with excellent and friendly volunteers. Plenty of water stations, with snack :) The trails were tough with some good steep hills and single track, as well as fire-road. The views were spectacular! The post-race festival was fun, with BBQ and local craft beer and snacks. Nice shirt, medal, bandana. .

Nice, small half marathon. Friendly volunteers, several water and gatorade stations. If the weather were cooler, it would be a fast course (essentially flat, a couple of short incline/slopes), but in very hot and humid conditions, it was tough. There were some errors in the name/timing computer (my bib had someone else's name and age group, but the were able to correct it). T-shirt is a cotton shirt, in purple, it is ok. Nice medal... and nice age-group trophy :) Overall, it was very fun.
